A sure sign that spring has arrived is seeing Cardinals "mate feed." We did, yesterday.
"During mate feeding the male cardinal picks up a
seed, hops over to the female bird, briefly touches beaks with her
before the female takes the food."

For several years I've meant to get a picture of it, but the camera is
never within reach. Since I can't find a picture of it on the
web, posting one may be my life's legacy. Yay. I have a
reason to wake up tomorrow. Dammit. I had to go look one
last time and found this picture approximating the ritual. Now,
unless a meteor slams into Chuck Schumer's head tonight, I have nothing
to look forward to.

Thanks for posting that. My wife is a nut about cardinals and she'll really like that picture.
ReplyDeleteHang in there Rodger- the hummingbirds will soon be back!

We've had our feeders out for a week. Any sightings in your yard?
ReplyDeleteThe Cardinal is a favorite of mine and of many states. He is the State bird of:Ill.-Ind.-Ky.-N.C.-Ohio-Va.-and W.Va....No other bird represents more states.
ReplyDeleteI saw a couple of hummers here in Northern AZ last week; then it turned cold again, so no more hummers.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm not gonna feed them this year; that syrup attracts too many bees. Also, I achieved my personal goal last year; over 50 lbs. of sugar through 4 feeders.

Of course MoSup hates you guts Rob.
ReplyDeleteGeez Rodger,
ReplyDeleteMoSup is cold!
Next time I'm buying drinks, there'll be an extra for her.
In the meantime, my hands are full up with titmice

and keeping the chickadees from perching on my rifles.

Last time I bought peanuts for the scrub jays, the clerk at Safeway asked me if I was feeding an elephant; I only bought six 3# bags.
