If you happen to find yourself in Saudi Arabia
driving down the highway toward Mecca, you will eventually encounter a
big sign advising you that Mecca is for Muslims only. The other road is
“obligatory for non Muslims.”
Penalty for taking the wrong road? Officially, there is “no set
punishment for this offense,” though incarceration followed by a large
fine and expulsion are not uncommon. [Continue]

I have been stopped on the road entering Mecca and turned around, largely because the Saudi cop was up to his eyeballs in screwed up traffic. There is a traditional penalty for non muslims entering Mecca - the cutting off of the evil doers legs. Point being preventing him from traveling to Mecca again. I understand this is no longer applied, though it could be, as it's still 'on the books' or, in the case of sharia law 'in the book'.
