Kindle

Today's $50
I'll predict that one of the hottest gift items this year (adjusted for the economy) will be Amazon's Kindle.  Since I'm the only person here who watches Oprah (wife has the TIVO remote at dinner time), I'll pass this on.  As the Oper said, she's tried all the E-Books that are out there, and found them wanting.  She was so enthused over Kindle that she devoted a major portion of her show with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and a priceless promotion of the product (just like she's done for The HIM).  Trust me, you will want the former as much as you hate the latter. At $359 it's expensive.  But if you're going to buy it, do it before Midnight, November 1st, and you can use this

PS ... I know how you feel about Oprah, I do too.  But this isn't about her.  It's about $50.

  1. I understand Oprah endorses this product also... vigorously, in fact.

  6. I happened to be home sick that day and watched the Kindle promotion. I do believe it is worth it. You can download all the newspapers you want, daily, as well as books. The books are $10 cheaper for the Kindle that in hardback, so it will eventually pay for itself. The download seemed to be fast.

I agree. I am not an Oprah fan, but this is a nice product and the $50 off is nice.

  7. NO!!!

    Absolutely not!

First, if Oprah recommended breathing, I would stop! Second, if price matters, go to the library and get yourself a card; you can read anything they have, you can ask them to get books or publications you want to read, and if you're REALLY squirlly, you never bring the books back! Just let them pile up in your basement, spare bedroom, attic, hallways, etc., till you have more books than the library and you become a lead feature on the six o'clock news when the SWAT team raids your house to get the over-due fines and the books back.

Hey... fifteen minutes of fame is fifteen minutes of fame, however you get it.

  8. First it's the big book of lesbian horse stories, next it's the amazon reader's kindle. Is there a connection here?

  12. I got a kindle a few months back (used my property tax refund check) and I'm loving it. Not only are the top line books cheaper than hardcover, they price the older books lower than the paperback price.

Plus, there are a handful of other sources for books that are in a compatible format. Baen.com is my favorite (they've got a nice free library of SciFi to peruse as well)

The only drawback of it that I've seen so far is that Oprah has endorsed it. But I got mine first, so I have no Oprah taint.

All in all, I'd say it's as good a purchase as my computer, and a better value than an Xbox... for me anyways.

  15. Well, after a year of dithering, I finally bought a Kindle. Not caring about any Opra taint, except now I know there is an 'h' at the end of the name. Fifty bucks is fifty bucks. It'll show up in a few days, and I may or may not offer my review.

I did notice that at least one blog is conspicuously absent from their feeds.
