That was probably the work of technicians, not engineers. Engineers would have left the floor littered with reams of designs, drawings and calculations. Technicians would just duct tape whatever they could find together to make it work.
I'm an engineer who spends most of my time hanging out with the technicians. They tolerate me because I bring the duct tape.
There's a ton of that stuff on YouTube under the heading of Pythagoras Switch, which is the title of a Japanese children's show. The show always featured one of these contraptions at the beginning and the end and usually featured one during the show itself. GrinfilledCelt
