Ode to Hummers
When Hummers Leave
“
I hate this moment each September
As I've said before, if you'll remember
A four month stay is much too hasty
When it takes so many to stuff my pastry
”
The
leaves change color and fall gradually; the temperature eases into
cold. But humming birds are gone in a flash. It appears ours left
yesterday. Sigh.
One year I left the feeder out and one January New Mexico morning I spied a little guy taking his fill. All I can think is that he was living in a dryer vent to stay warm.

ReplyDeleteI suppose pastry stuffed with stuffed hummingbird tongues would be haute cuisine.
ReplyDeleteOr is that just showing off.
The few around my yard left with the cold & storm front that came through first of the month
ReplyDeleteI hope they leave and take this endless string of 90 degree dry days with them.
ReplyDelete90?!
ReplyDeleteI'd KILL for a 90 degree day!!

"Hey you! Bee! Who let you into the buffet?"
