Russia's
top drug official warned in an interview with Foreign Policy on Friday
of what he called the "catastrophic" consequences of marijuana
legalization measures like California's upcoming ballot initiative,
saying darkly that widespread legal drug use would produce "psychiatric
deviations" and will only encourage drug addiction.
Viktor Ivanov, a former KGB officer and prominent
member of
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's inner circle, even
took the unusual step of going to Los Angeles earlier this week to
"conduct a campaign against legalizing marijuana in California,"
[...]
He continued: "I'm afraid that the consequences of
[legalization] will be catastrophic. Even the Netherlands, where they
sell marijuana legally in coffee shops, they are now reversing on this.
Because there, and everywhere, drug addiction is becoming stronger and
the people who are addicted develop psychiatric deviations. They say,
'What does God do when he wants to punish a person? He deprives him of
his mind.'"

When
old-style Soviet Progressives,
or any progressives for that matter, show concern for my
well-being, it's a 100% guarantee that they feel threatened by
something else. My first thought must be that legalization of pot
- which I'm against so long as the state has in place other controls
over its citizen's behaviour, and its healthcare .... my first
thought is that local harvests will cause the illegal markets to
collapse. And that this somehow worries them. Somehow. My first
solution, unfortunately, is to carpet nuke Russia and California. |

Well actually his comment about California pot is just a lead in, a cover for a more base concern. I agree that he give's a rat's ass about California. Russian's have always had a problem with understand how much power a US State has vs. the Federal government. They think a relaxation on drug policy in Califronia is a sign of lax drugh policy as far as the Feds go. As you get into the article you'll find a concern about the poppy eradication policy in Afghanistan. That is a major concern for Russians on several fronts. Heroin the movement and sale of it is a profit maker for terrorists/criminals which infest the countries on the borders of Russia and Russia's internal populations. Also drug use hurts their attempts to control the dropping birth rate in their country and the increase of AID's. A failure to keep a lid on crime and terrorism presents a threat to the current regimes ability to hold onto power.
ReplyDeletewell, yeah, there's that too
ReplyDeleteI'm in favor of "selective" carpet bombing and the effective use of UAV's, and crusies missles. You probably wouldn't go wrong carpet bombing Berkley for instance or taking out the California legislature. Air dropping toe popper all along the US borders and blowing the bridges might improve the tone of things also. Packing certain politicians mouths with salt and sewing their lips together (Jimmy Carter) could help with the undead politician problem.
ReplyDeleteRemember violence never settled anything......the check is in the mail.....I won't do it in your mouth.
