TV Journo School
How to Report the News

Live news blogs are the future, so I enrolled in a TV Journo School.  I'm learning so much. Wow. Here's today's lesson.

And if you're lucky, a comment by a concerned academic who just happens to completely agree with the reporter.

Or if not, you can just pay them to agree.

 iPad-Notebook

Boned Jello

This unattributed chart roughly covers the questions I have about the iPad.  Is the analysis wrong, or is this a product aimed at Apple cultists?

My understanding is that it is aimed at the Kindle. It's a luxury item. We pragmatic folk will be late adopters.

Casca

~
Casca is right -- it is aimed at the Kindle. The problem is, it isn't even good compared to a kindle. Worthless piece of crap. Worst Apple product since the Newton.

~
Actually I don't think that Apple supports flash on anything...

"About Adobe: They are lazy, Jobs says. They have all this potential to do interesting things but they just refuse to do it. They don’t do anything with the approaches that Apple is taking, like Carbon. Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, he says. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash. No one will be using Flash, he says. The world is moving to HTML5."

So I guess Net books have another plus. No Flash means No Hulu.

Apple could put a keyboard on a horse apple, retail it at $300 and a half million true believers would stand in line to buy the first run...especially if they died it some politically correct color like mauve or summer mist.

~
I have never heard of a Netbook.

Can you download and store music?

What's the difference between it and a laptop?

Thanks.

~
Death is a natural consequence of mauve and summer mist.

~
Molonlabe28: A netbook is essentially a very small laptop. It doesn't have a CD-rom drive (doesn't really need one), and generally has a relatively small harddrive (often because it's a solid-state harddrive). However, it does have plenty of things like USB drives, wireless and wired ethernet, card readers, etc. Also, it can have a longer battery length than a typical laptop and it will be somewhat cheaper than a laptop.

Honestly, I prefer laptops, but netbooks do have their place.

~
Holy mother of PRAM people. It's a first iteration. As much as I love my Macs, the last Apple product I rushed out to buy was the original iPod Nano - and I still love that sweet little device.
I'd buy an iPad over a Kindle in a heartbeat if I were going to buy that kind of device. It's got a color screen and though it can't DL books via 3G, it can do so through Wi-Fi and hoe far is anyone from a hotspot these days? Even freaking Mickey D's has 'em.
One of the great values of Apple is that it pushes the envelope. The original iPod was not exactly earth-shaking but without it, do you think the state of digital media would be what it is today?
Maybe. But I doubt it.
I hope the iPad is a success but I look forward to what's going to happen in and around it with even more anticipation. Culturally, it's a great tine to be alive (he says as he's listening via iTunes to a CD of Brazilian music based off Wagner's music called "Parsifal's Trip To Brazil").
Oh and my Magic Mouse is aMAZing.

~
Every v.1.0 device (netbook, laptop, computer, cellphone, car, flat-screen TV, iPod....ANYTHING) sucks and lacks features you really want.

You pay a premium for jumping too quick and getting the privlidge of waving under everyone else's noses.

Don't whine and wait for the real v.3 version that'll be what you really want.

~
I know somebody who writes reviews for one of the larger gaming sites out there. I haven't held it in my hand but I was talking to him about the I-pad and he said that neither he, nor anyone at the office cared too much for it. They said it doesn't do much the Ipod touch or the Iphone doesn't do.

They all agreed, most of them (except the diehard apple guys) saying they'd wait and see if the second generation Ipad was any better, when it comes out.

~
Even if I were to buy one, which I won't, the Ipad would never replace my Kindle, for this reason: The Kindle is not backlit, making it much easier on the eyes for longer reading sessions.

The iPad will be a cult device, but will find quite a few niche uses. With a software development kit and the availability of a spreadsheet program for it, I, for one, have a specific use for it in my work.

Its advantage over a netbook happens to be the touchpad form of keying data. In my case, it'd involve touch buttons AND the keyboard.

So, yes, it is a fancy toy for the time being, but in some cases the darn thing IS useful. My only beef is that the 3G version is tied to AT&T.

Elvis and... who's the blonde?

Speaking for yourself there as The Spanker, eh? Growing up in my house of spank with whatever's near.... If a guy did that to me? Not going to happen.

P.S. clem, she looks like Lee Remington to me.

I thought she was Jenny Maxwell from "Blue Hawaii".

She looks like Tuesday Weld, and if so, according to my websearch, the movie is "Wild In The Country", 1961.

~
You're right, Mary & Tailgunner. It's Tuesday Weld. My mistake was in thinking Elvis only spanked one gorgeous blonde in his movies...

~
Speaking just for me you understand, being a curmudgeonly old f-rt, I don't give a hoot what her name is... I'd tan that hide more than once a day, and extra on the weekends. I'm jus' sayin', is all....

~
Ha! I asked my resident Elvis expert (my lovely Bride - she's made several pilgrimages to Graceland - she knows Elvis!). SFAOV Sgsaur you were right but mucked your hand to early. Here it is: Jenny Maxwell in Blue Hawaii

Holy Coincidence, Batman! I was just watching the Duke spank Maureen O'Hara in McClintock! yesterday while I shined my shoes, my guns and the bottle of Makers I got for Christmas. It was a different time...

~
the duke was offered the opportunity to spank Maureen O'hara in the quiet man also, but didn't. He was "walking" her back from the train station and a bystander runs up hands him a stick and says "Here's a nive to beat the lady with." the Duke grabs the stick says thanks and keeps on dragging his wife through the meadow.

Different day, different time.

~
wow, bad typing..

"Here's a nice stick to beat the lady with"

Tiger Hawk: I met Michael Barone at a cocktail party in 2005.
He asked me where I was from, I said "Princeton," and he accurately told me the percentage of the voters who had gone for John Kerry in 2004. That's why this column is so interesting for its forecast of an electoral earthquake.

NYT Accuses U.S. Military of Running "Rigged Trials" - (via St. Ann)
"President George W. Bush’s decision to hold prisoners outside the law and then attempt to try them in rigged military courts was legally wrong, and hugely damaging to American values and this country’s global image."

AFA to open an area for witches and druids? WHAT THE F-CK??? My "Boys In Blue" are cowing for this TRIPE??? Sell my stripes for SCRAP and sign me on with the Coasties! Bag my face so the world will never know I once wore "air superiorty blue" with pride! What the HELL is this politically correct world coming to when we HAVE to make room for "alternative religious beliefs?" Whatever happened to Blanket Parties?

I am sick... sick, I tell you... I would have thought the Swabbies at Anapolis would have "caved" first. RKOF, maybe you want to re-target that first nuke on the AFA... it seems to be in serious need of a "cleansing."

~
I don't have a problem w/ Wiccans doing their own religious activities on our military bases. When's the last time a Wiccan crashed an airliner or shot up a U.S. military base or rolled a grenade into a tent? Never.

If we want to start banning religious services, I suggest we start those who do those type of things.

~
I worked with Mike Barone at USNews and he, in contradistinction to other "names," (coughRobertscough, coughBorgercough) was a real gentleman and one of the most brilliant political minds it's ever been my pleasure to meet.

Blogdog,

I agree with Chuck Martel and take it even further. Not just the grenade rollers, but the ones already at the AFA who make life very hard on those who were either not Christians, or the right denomination of Christian.

In the navy, I had my patriotism and loyalty questioned often enough by that crowd and I came close to doing bodily harm to more than one of them. I got everything from the old dual loyalty screed to being a Christ killer.

I've known a few Wiccans. I find them to decent, gentle people. Not a single one of them has questioned my loyalty or, at least to my face, called me "the k word" or the J-b compound word (getting past the filters, Rodge...).

 Slam, Bam, Thank you Ma'am

Guesting on the Roundtable on ABC News’ Sunday Morning Talk Show This Week (video from ABC below), Fox News President Roger Ailes defended Glenn Beck from an attack by Huffington Post co-founder Arianna Huffington.

Here is a transcript of a portion of that segment:

HUFFINGTON: Well, Roger, it’s not a question of picking a fight. And aren’t you concerned about the language that Glenn Beck is using, which is, after all, inciting the American people? There is a lot of suffering out there, as you know, and when he talks about people being slaughtered, about who is going to be the next in the killing spree…

AILES: Well, he was talking about Hitler and Stalin slaughtering people. So I think he was probably accurate. Also, I’m a little….

HUFFINGTON: No, no, he was talking about this administration [Emphasis added].

AILES: I don’t — I think he speaks English. I don’t know, but I mean, I don’t misinterpret any of his words.

Ailes is so Huffington's superior.

Beck definitely brings out the best in Zsa Zsa Gabors' Bastard stepchild doesn't he?

This Bitch is like a painful, bleeding Hemorrhoid.

~
There was a huge profile piece on him from a paper recently (I might have been linked to it from here) and I read it from start to finish. Incredibly interesting. He's out there with what he believes instead of wrapping it in 'neutrality', and has done incredibly well with it.

And you know he's powerful, when he can threaten to quit if his network is interfered with, and Granddaddy Murdoch isn't willing to axe him.

That the thing. People (including some who should know better) were going overboard on this guy. His election was helpful in derailing Obama's socialistic agenda. However, make no mistake he is not a mainstream Republican. In Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, etc. he'd be considered a standard issue Democrat. He roots for our side in foreign affairs (wars and such) so he wouldn't fit in with Dems in Massachusetts, but that doesn't make him someone who could be the party standard bearer in a national election.

~
El-correcto LB .. but I really do think Old Guard Republicans would prefer him to any conservative you'd care to name.

~
I don't care if he was to the left of Che Guevara, not in this case. Yanking away Kennedy's senate seat is a once in a lifetime thing. We'll be talking about it in 40 years when one of his daughters is sworn in.

:-p

~
How many votes will the senate have before he is seated?
He has vowed to vote against 0bamacare hasn't he?

The election was 13 days ago.

Seat Scott Brown or tell the American people why.

Similar situation. "Mrs. --Jack" was away on holiday. We were speaking on the telephone and I causally mentioned "Did you know our sink will hold ALL of our dishes?" Silence for a full 20 seconds. Then "that's it, I'm getting a flight back in the morning."

I batch it quite a bit due to our jobs.

I find that the snow shovel helps with the larger debris and that Lysol and bleach take care of most of the discharges and other residue left by the strippers I bring home.

Molonlabe - Do you bring the strippers before or after you use the snow shovel? Just wondering what class of strippers you hang out with. ;>D
