This was Eastern
Airlines in the 1960s, when the the phrase "Come Fly With Me" was thought to be
scandalously suggestive. It was before the airlines discovered
that the public didn't want attractive single stewardesses any
more. They instead demanded matronly Flight
Attendants, some with mustaches. It was also before the
Eastern Airline's machinest union drove it into bankruptcy.
In other words, when America was at its peak.

WTF! There's a wootoff going on down the street! You're supposed to tell us about these things.

I think the suggestive commercials were from National. "I'm Sally ... Fly Me!"
ReplyDeleteThat one didn't go over well with the stews. In fact some wore pins saying "Go Fly Yourself".
I was waiting for this. Demand for nanny blogging. sigh.
ReplyDeleteRodge, I'll see your Eastern and raise you a Continental, "We Really Move our Tail(s) for You."

I'll see your Continental with Braniff's "If it fits, put it in."
ReplyDeleteMy mistake, it was "If You've Got It, Flaunt It."

ReplyDeleteI wanna fly Korean Air. I like theor commercials.
ReplyDeleteHow about those wonderful PSA stews (Pacific Southwest Airlines). My Gawd there was a happy bunch. I was eighteen and on my way to Viet Nam when one of those lovlies said "Come back and fly with us real soon." In about a year, I hope, I said and she said, Going over? Yup. And, God bless her, she said, I hope to see you on the return flight and flashed a smile as big as what America once was and God willing will be again. That, boys, is what we're fighting The Restoration for. I have always hoped she has had a long and trouble free life, and married a really rich guy who treated her according to what she was worth to me at that very moment. We can all dream, I suppose.

Let me suggest: The matrons of today WERE the stewardesses of yesteryear, The thing is, they enegendered the changes because they still see themselves as those adventurous heroins, and they want things to never change. Maybe better mirrors would help?
