Micro Waves & Communication
TECHNO
THRILLS
“
The
story here is that having dropped the cell phone into the drink, the
owner attempted to dry it in the microwave. I am absolutely
positive
this happened, and more than once. Sheesh. When MoSup
dropped hers
into the pool, I wrapped it in underpants and put it in the clothes
dryer. Didn't work, but it at least still looked pretty.
Sometimes, just sometimes a dunked cellphone can be saved. Open it up, and bury it in a bowl of raw rice in a warm room for a couple of days. Every once in a while one can be resurrected.
flipped a small sailboat in the middle of a salt-water lake while wearing a pager. Took the pager home, rinsed it several times in clear fresh water, then laid it on the counter under a 75-watt work lamp overnight to dry. Pager worked until I left that company years later.
Fresh water is key to rinsing our corrosives and conductive deposits. Low heat (200 degrees) is the key to drying.
And yes, I AM a professional, except I never did anything as small as a pager before this.
Washed a thumb drive in my jeans once. Put it in the toaster over on low. Case warped a bit. but I was able to get my data off it.
Next time, lower heat.
Women's safety tip (from the phone store guy): ladies. don't put your bottles water in your purse with your phone. Mistress of Pain killed to in two months that way.
My Samsung Galaxy spent 3 mins in the washer. This I learned: It's very fast to drain a front loader, under a minute. Don't use a hair dryer to salvage the cell phone, it is contraindicated. Dry rice may work, but it helps to know ahead of time about that one.

MC
Dry out electronics by putting them in a container of dry rice. If it's ever going to work again, that'll do the trick.
ReplyDeleteDisassemble, distilled water rinse, dry under low heat in the oven.
ReplyDeleteThat's worked for me many times.
I'm tickled that so many regulars have apparently dropped their cell in the toilet. I don't know why.

Won't work on cellphones these days, mostly cajun.
ReplyDeleteManufacturers put moisture sensors in them these days ... they automatically brick themselves if they think they got too wet.
Yea, it's a racket.
The 'flush with fresh water and dry under low heat' has been used for decades by r/c airplane guys for our seaplane radios, too.

ReplyDeleteJeez, I thought that photo was a world class booger. Sorry. I blame Jack Daniels (and Bush, of course).
ReplyDeleteRan my cellphone through the wash once.
ReplyDeleteIt was one of those "Boulder" phones sold by Verizon that were meant to take a beating.
The phone worked after going through the wash. However, it took a while to get all the water out of the speaker.
