Northside
Independent School District plans to track students next year on two of
its campuses using technology implanted in their student identification
cards in a trial that could eventually include all 112 of its schools
and all of its nearly 100,000 students.
District officials said the Radio Frequency Identification System
(RFID) tags would improve safety by allowing them to locate students —
and count them more accurately at the beginning of the school day to
help offset cuts in state funding, which is partly based on attendance.

counties where Lyndon Johnson received 118% of the vote. If I was
writing a novel, members of the school board would be given rides on
government drones which would be quickly shot down by Judge
Napolitano's
band of patriots. It would be fiction of course, because in real
life
we'll go on thanking the people who strip us of all freedom in exchange
for free Band-Aids. And it would be unlawful too, of course.

ReplyDeleteIn fact, a school in California gave up the program ( after spending a crapload of cash on it ) for exactly that reason:
ReplyDeleteStudents would just microwave their IDs ... and if given a replacement ID, microwave that as well.
The district could not use the data to prove attendance and get money for processing kids ... which was what this was all about in the first place.
The school computer club should offer, at cost, replication of the RFID chips.

That, or they should a metal case, you know, to keep their id safe and to protect it from stray microwaves.

Even barring human nature's desire to thwart a system, they're not going to be able to prove greater attendance. In fact, the opposite is much more likely. Be careful about creating foolproof systems, it makes it a lot harder to fudge the data.

...find the kid to volunteer for a "dangerous mission". Everyone else give that kid their ID cards. Volunteer goes to school, 100% attendance, 1 student attending.

I don't get the problem with this. Kids don't have or need rights in school, beyond the right not to be indoctrinated by lefty BS. I'm 22, five years removed from high school. 75%5 of kids out there are stupid and don't stay on campus when they ought.
