I could say has already occurred to you.
They will eventually be able to read data off the visual cortex on the surface of the back of the brain.
How is this useful?
Werneke's Region, the area responsible for dreams, day dreams, and schizophrenic hallucinations uses the visual cortex to send the conscious its output as well.
Right now, the sensor technology is very limited. What happens when that tech improves a thousandfold? a millionfold? more?
As the resolution increases, and our ability to understand and interpret that data improves through increased computational power, then our ability to "read more" is guaranteed.
That "visualization" you linked to means things are farther along than I expected. Very impressive. Here is, to me, the key part:
(In brief, the algorithm processes each of the 18 million clips through the brain model, and identifies the clips that would have produced brain activity as similar to the measured brain activity as possible
Translation: we have no idea what this brain activity means, but by using known video samples and brain activity sampling, we can show guess-estimate of what the brain might be "seeing".
That visualization was done on a 1 second resolution and Lord knows how much computation. Moore's law says it going to get a lot easier to do and a lot better in our own lifetimes.
Who knows what other areas of the brain they may ne able to map using this or similar techniques. It's very clearly going to be the ultimate lie detector at least.
It's enevitable.

The one reason why this technology could be derailed is - that's right. Elected officials will hardly want it.
