AHEM
Heart-clogging
trans fats were once a staple of the American diet, plentiful in baked
goods, microwave popcorn and fried foods. Now, mindful of the health
risks, the Food and Drug Administration is getting rid of what's left
of them for good.- Feds
come after Trans-fats
AMENDMENT

sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation
thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all
territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is
hereby prohibited.
AMENDMENT
XXI
Passed
by Congress February 20, 1933. Ratified December 5, 1933.
Section 1.
The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United
States is hereby repealed.
Them's the hoops would-be nannies had to jump through in the days when we still paid attention to the
constitution. The
first attempt, that I remember, to circumvent the law, was by FDA
Commissioner David Kessler. Appointed by Bush, he literally
begged
President-elect Clinton to keep him on, and, appreciative as he
was of
a good lick-spittle, Willy obliged. Kessler deemed that he had
the
authority to issue a ban on cigarettes by fiat. He was widely
taken to
task by constitutional scholars, but what probably stopped him was the
Billion dollar vein of gold the Administration, and Democrat ally
ATLA were mining. You remember; The suit against Big
Tobacco, for a charade called second hand smoke, which was that
era's global warming. By
the by, I checked to see what Kessler was up to today, or whether he
was even alive. Guess what?
Do these people ever go away?

This article at junk science shows nicely how the idiot left (mis)uses 'studies' to find whatever they want to find, especially when looking for 'evidence' to shore up their imagined, hysterical crises:

Apples & Oranges, transfats are artificial, and are connected to heart disease. They shouldn't have been in our food chain in the first place.

It's nobody's business what any of us eat. "get the government out of my kitchen!"
ReplyDeleteOK pilgrim, have it your way, but don't complain when you find a thumb in your Dinty Moore Beef Stew.
ReplyDeleteCasca
One thumb in a can of Dinty Moore and we're all over it.
ReplyDeleteThirty percent of kids failing to graduate from public schools, and we need to spend more money "for the kids."
Imagine a brake manufacturer who produced brake pads that failed 30 percent of the time. Or, Dinty Moore canned thumbs in 30 percent of their cans.
It's amazing the filters we use when we want to be smart.
.
Especially amusing is that 40 years ago, government was demonizing regular fats, which brought about the development of the superior trans-fat.
ReplyDeleteY'know, tho - they "claim" that banning trans-fats will save 7000 lives a year. But banning alcohol would save so many more...oh, wait.
If they want to save lives, they should ban abortions.
Nope, can't do that; it's a "womens' health" issue. And it's a Right. But some Rights, like abortion, are more important than other rights, like the one about bearing arms. They can hammer on that to their hearts' content.
You can have my trans fats when you take them out of my dead sticky fingers.
ReplyDeleteLOL
ReplyDeleteWell, to clog up your brain arteries some, there's the recent conclusion that LDL and HDL and cholesterol counts do not relate directly to atherosclerosis. Some with high LDL/HDL counts live longer lives that those with lower counts who succumb to artery clogs.
ReplyDeleteSecond hand smoke is unicorn farts. The scientific term is hogwash. The numbers don't show any causative relation between the 'smoke' and disease. Correlation is below accepted statistical norms. In short, its hooey.
So the nannies in DC will do whatever they think is right for you. To you. After all, it is "for the children."
BTW, they will never stop. They are relentless in their zeal to make you life conform to their norm, except that they get the Bimmer and the country cottage, you get the 3rd floor 1 br walkup and the Yougo Coupe.

From the article:
ReplyDelete"Still, Americans are eating much less of the fat. According to the FDA, trans fat intake among Americans declined from 4.6 grams per day in 2003 to around one gram in 2012." {there are 454 grams in a pound, so cut your butter into 454 pieces and have one per day...}
75% reduction since aiming their campaign at trans fats, yet:
Quote:"The advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest first petitioned FDA to ban trans fats nine years ago. The group's director, Michael Jacobson, says the prohibition is "one of the most important lifesaving actions the FDA could take.""
CSPIRG is a watermelon organization that Bobby Kennedy Jr is affiliated with, he of Chavez 'free heating oil for the Mass poor' fame.
These zealot groups make a good living crying wolf, the sky is falling and other claims of impending disaster. While being chauffeured and flying in private aircraft, attending conferences at right comfortable places .. on someone else' dime. Remember, some animals are more equal than others.

Nothing compares to the taste of foods prepared with good leaf lard.
ReplyDeleteIs it important to mention that it's Teh .Gov that pushed the whole "trans-fats good :: butter BAD" thing 30 years ago?
ReplyDeletejust, yanno, sayin...

Decades ago, F. Paul Wilson wrote 'Lipidleggin', addressing this same issue. At the time, I thought it ridiculous. Recently, I found it on the web at

and re-read it. He was scarily prescient.
