Same Hawk - I combined two images to help save the
environmet.
This Red
Tail Hawk is hardly newsworthy, but it is maybe just the second time in
30+ years that one has been around long enough, and close enough,
to have a good picture taken. We've been strewing plenty of seed
and bread on the deck, but it's been the (heated) water tray
that's drawing birds of every stripe to our yard. Mr. Hawk may
have stopped for a drink, and is waiting around for a nice plump
Mourning Dove to stop in. Or even, OMG, even a ratbastard
squirrel! Our Red Fox is also very active these days, as are the Coon
Raiders
at night. Worse comes to bad, we will eat all of these creatures.

Then you'll enjoy this, Rodge.
ReplyDeleteI'm no expert, but that looks like a youngun. Be a nice friend to have.
ReplyDeleteDidn't you once link to a video of someone's backyard after a hurricane filled with hundreds of hummingbirds?

Rodger, not trying to be a know-it-all, but that fellow is a red shouldered hawk. The striped tail is the giveaway. We have them everywhere here in my part of Florida on the northern edge of the Ocala National Forest. Great birds for small varmint and snake control.
ReplyDeleteHope the hawk can avoid the wind farms sprouting
ReplyDeleteBeg to differ on the hawk species, looks to me like either Coopers or Sharp-shinned (chicken hawks). It's looking to grab one of the one's you're feeding, not the water. You won't find any other birds out for about an hour or so. The hawks will just sit there and look for some movement to flush one out of hiding.

As I was standing in the back yard the other day waiting for the medical examiner to show up , (because I refused to go inside to see my Brothers body) . I was reflecting on the fact that I'm the last man standing of 3 brothers . Suddenly two huge red tailed hawks came windmilling down , and landed in the tree right above my head ! This has never happened before , and at that moment I knew that they were now together again ! They sat there looking at me , and I said "HELLO , GLAD TO SEE YOU MADE IT !" Then they both flew away ! I cried my eyes out , while smiling at the same time ; ) > SMIBSID
ReplyDeleteI don't know what species it is, but I'm betting it would tear your ass up, if you tried to catch it.
ReplyDeleteWe have a Coopers Hawk that hunts in our back yard. We haven't figured out where it nests yet, but it isn't in our trees. My wife was putting out a bunch of bird seed the other day and my mother-in-law asked what kind of birds she was feeding? She said "I'm feeding the hawk." MIL started laughing and said "Hawks don't eat seeds." My dear wife responded "No, but the doves love the seeds, and the hawk loves the doves..."
