ReplyDeleteWell, in the case of my father, ex-Reichsmarine, it came when his POW boat set him ashore at Quebec Canada in 1943. The Germans were marched off the boat and ordered to form groups of 8. The Nazi Gauleiters ordered refusal on the grounds that the Canadians intended to kill them all, and small groups were easier to murder. The Gauleiters had great experience at that.
Canadian troops forced the Germans to obey. The groups of 8 were then ordered to select 2 men for a working party. They were told it was to get a meal for the 8 men. The groups all whispered amongst themselves and refused on the grounds that the Canadians intended to kill them 2 at a time.
Canadian troops again forced obedience. 20 minutes later each 2 wan working party returned carrying a full steel 5 gallon can full of wieners and beans.
Dad and most of the others had an epiphany. The poor mongrel starving Canadians had so much food that in the middle of a war they could give 8 enemy POW men 5 gallons of food for one meal. The Germans were utterly horrified, shocked, when the surplus food was simply thrown away.
In his old age dad used to love to watch old clips of Hitler giving speeches. He used to sit their muttering about what an idiot he had been, how could he fall for such an obvious lying, criminal, douche bag, only he didn't know the phrase douche bag, and used much stronger language. The old boy actually met Hitler, and shook his hand, when Hitler gave a speech to his apprenticeship class.

ReplyDeleteThe Germans got a clue when the 8th Air Force showed up over Berlin with 1200 B-17s and B-24s in March of '44. By then, of course, it was too late for them to do anything about said douche bag.

I have a movie recomendation for you all. Its called 49th Paralel and was made in 1941 before America was in the war, but Canada was. A nazi U-boat gets sunk in Hudson Bay and some of the crew tries to walk out of Canada and into the USA. Mayhem, carnage and pro democracy propaganda ensue. Spoiler alert---it has a happy ending.
