Yeah, one side references the Nazi's, and the other side responds with McCarthy. However, only one side can see the truth in both. And I believe it's explained excellently in one of Coulters books.
Godwin is a tool. The plain fact of the matter is that when it comes to making a point that "...and THIS is how things turn really bad if taken to the extreme", there is no better analogy than the Nazis.
That's using the Nazis as a proper debating device -- but just calling someone a Nazi (which is the proper invocation of Godwin's Law) is the refuge of fools and knaves, because it's intended to end the debate.
