Flying the Hellcat

imagine that many of you, like me, need some brushing up on flying the Grumman
Hellcat. You're welcome. Semper Pie!
I only flew the water bomber, but I can confirm the Pratt R-2800 is the best engine ever built, used on most good aircrafts of the times...It was replaced by turbines only due to the rarity of Av-gas.
First airplane I (and a bunch of other navy guys) ever flew was a T-28B Trojan with a nine cylinder Wright engine turning out 1425 horsepower. A great link to the past. Good times.
I can't find it but there was a TV history show that showed the U.S. Army Air Force and the U.S. Navy Aviation co-operating to make a Zero sandwich. The P-38s had the advantage over the Zero at high altitudes. The Zero's dived to get into their comfort zone and found Hellcats waiting for them. If they tried to zoom climb away from the Hellcats they ran into the P38s.

ReplyDeleteP-38. The old "fork-tailed devil." What a wonderful aircraft. #4 in my list of all time faves. A-10 Warthog, Spitfire, Corsair and P-38.
