  1. I took Spanish first, like a lot of New Yorkers. Later took Russian, which wasn't too easy. Finally, as an adult, I took Farsi. Went to class for many months, and did well, and even did the written language. Now, 30 years later, there is little I can remember. I had been to Iran several times while in the AF, but didn't learn the language till a few years later.

  2. Believe it or not: Afrikaans. Like German in that the principle verb ends the sentence, but Afrik doesn't have that tiresome European fetish for gender-specific pronouns & adjectives, and case-specific nouns. Also fewer pronunciation issues (like French, dear God).

    "I lost my hat"
German: Ich habe meinen Hoed verloren
Afrik: Ek het my hoed verloor
    French: J'ai perdu mon chapeau
    etc

Too bad Afrikaans is a pointless language spoken only by a couple million people worldwide.

  3. In the Marine Corps we were bilingual. We spoke English and Profanity. The profanity was pretty easy to pick up.

I'm sure it was. After all, one of the first lessons is that "USMC" stands for "U Signed the Muthafuckin' Contract!"
