Penguins are mercenary little creatures....was on a USCG icebreaker from 1978-1979 in Antarctica....usually, when they are rafted up like this, there are leopard seals hanging out below. They then begin elbowing out the smaller ones into the water until one comes up, then they all jump in. I've seen then go down to just two, with the smaller one eventually getting knocked in. After a while, the remaining one would look several directions, sort of wave his flippers as if to say "what the hell..." and jump in.
