That makes me think of all the WWII surplus things that were dirt cheap in mail order catalogs when I was a kid. I still have an Army overcoat I purchased in 1970 for $2.00. 1943 issue and like new. Like most kids, I lost all of the other stuff. The 1903 Springfield I wanted cost $25 or $30 bucks but my Dad had to order it as I wasn't 18 yet. He thought it was a waste of money. Sigh........
It's like reading that cut diamonds littered the earth 100 years ago and they had to pay people to cart them off ... Just heartbreaking to think what a warehouse of those would be worth now ... Pvt Cpl Boone
I can remember going to the local (WT Grant) drug/variety store with my uncle in the early '60s. They had a guns/ammo dept. and were selling "artillery" Lugers for 90 bucks!

in 20 years we will look ack on under 200.00 SKS's and wish we had bought a few. OK, that's a stretch, I wish I had bought a dozen police trade in S&W M-10s at 79.00 each instead of just 1 back in 1980. Bannerman "sporterized" mil surp are achieving a collector status of their own.
Guns were not cheaper back then. Money is cheaper today. In the 1880s a twenty Dollar gold piece would buy a Colt Single Action Army revolver, along with a holster and box of cartridges. A Twenty Dollar gold piece still will. A dollar a day was a normal wage back then, a lot of new guns cost half or two thirds of a month's wages. So, what is a half a month's wages for a skilled worker these days? What does a new Remington or S&W cost? Or a new Colt?
It's hard to believe but NYC was the home of many fine gun stores. Chambers St., downtown Manhattan right net to city hall, was littered with them. I bought my first rifle there in 1962. JimB
