eliminate the Electoral College's power to choose a president if enough
states endorse the idea.
Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed legislation that approves delivering the
state's 15 electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote.
The Assembly approved the bill last month and the Senate followed suit
earlier this month.
Maryland — with 10 electoral votes — had been the only state to pass the compact into law.

ReplyDeleteUh, boys . . . . This whole Electoral College thing is supposed to work this way. It was specifically designed to prevent those areas of the country w/ the highest populations (e.g. the northeast corridor) from controlling a presidential election. Otherwise, a presidential candidate would only work to win votes from states with the highest populations and ignore the rest of the country – and that just wouldn’t be right.

You got it Chuck. I've argued for years with idiots who think "Popular" vote count is the "Will of The People". Once I hog tie them and give 'em a shot with the cattle prod, they finally understand that if it wasn't for the Electoral College, candidates for POTUS would only show their mugs in CA, NY, FL, TX, and a few other states and the other 45 states would be flushed down the shitter. I have converted many to the "Truth"...hehehe

Even if these states pass this law ... it has no effect.
ReplyDeleteFaithless electors have voted for candidates other than the ones they said they would vote for ... and the constitution allows it.
Once the Electors are chosen, they elect the President. If one chooses to ignore NJ state law, the state of NJ can legally do nothing about it.
Ordering the Republican Electors to vote for a Democrat because the Democrat got the popular vote ( and vice versa ) cannot be enforced. The Republicans can vote for the Republican ... and the State government of NJ can go pound sand.
What happens when their state overwhelming selects one candidate, but an opposing candidate has the overall majority in the rest of the counrty?

Also, this is not unconstitutional. Each state gets to determine how they select their electors. If Maryland and Jersey want to let the rest of the nation pick for them, that is their choice. Stupid, but their choice.
