I dunno if it made Motor Trend or not. This does go back to the early 80's though. I see in Google that somebody in Maryland had that plate on his Caddy until the state figured it out and yanked it. Cheech and Chong also had a variation of it in "Up in Smoke".
I know it's a fake, because there's a Transformer on the other side of the intersection.
