Working Class

An Important Qualifier

Shannon Love from Chicago Boyz provides your daily boner - or significant tumescence of choice . .

Via Instapundit comes a major (albeit British) media report that the Tea Party protest in Washington turnout could be as high as two million.

As impressive as that no doubt upper-limit estimate is, I think that the raw number leaves out an important qualifier. To be  truly accurate, the report should say:

Two million people with jobs

Getting hundreds of thousands of kids, the professionally unemployed and government workers to show up isn’t that hard (especially if someone buys the bus tickets). Getting two million middle-class, middle-aged people with jobs, careers, children and businesses is way, way more impressive.

In his book Parlement of Whores, P.J. O'Rourke told the story of driving around D.C. with a conservative lobbyist, when they turned the corner and there was a left-wing wacko demonstration in fully bloom, with hippie types waving pre-printed signs and screaming bullshit in the streets. Why can't our side do these kinds of well-organized, spontaneous demonstrations, P.J. remarked to his companion.

"Because we have jobs" the companion replied.

Michelle Malkin has pics of the crowd and a schematic that shows how to estimate crowds. Considering how the crowd overflowed onto Pennsylvania ave and another street the number 2 million is probably about right. Also, anyone who keeps pushing the 60,000 number should be remembered for the "after revolution clean-up". I'm thinking neck-tie party.
