I've been in discussions about this before. I propose that American colonists went with the right side because when you carry a firearm cradled on your opposite arm, the barrel points to the left side where oncoming danger should be kept.

I think Europeans put their steering wheel on that side because they secretly want to be mailmen...
ReplyDeleteCarrying your lance on the left requires a modified support bracket; but, if you're right-handed, it sure is easier to text while carrying it that way.
ReplyDeleteNope ... we drive on the right because carriage and wagon makers in the US put the brake lever on the left side of the wagon.
ReplyDeleteBoats have the steering on the right. I don't understand why, but that, at least, seems universal.

When Cris-craft and others started making automobile engined runabouts in the 20's, they deliberately copied automobile style controls.
