Virginia the Role Model

Obama's Virginia Defeat

Democrats were trounced in Tuesday's state legislature election, despite the president's heavy investment of time in the state.

Mr. Obama was the first Democrat to win Virginia since 1964; he beat John McCain by seven percentage points; and he did so on the strength of his appeal to Northern Virginia's many white-collar independents. Along with victories in North Carolina, Colorado and Nevada, the Obama Old Dominion win in 2008 inspired a flurry of stories about how Democrats had forever altered the political map.

Virginia Republicans added seven new seats to their majority in the House of Delegates, giving them two-thirds of that chamber's votes—the party's largest margin in history. The GOP also took over the Virginia Senate in results that were especially notable, given that Virginia Democrats this spring crafted an aggressive redistricting plan that had only one aim: providing a firewall against a Republican takeover of that chamber. Even that extreme gerrymander didn't work.

Every Republican incumbent—52 in the House, 15 in the Senate—won.

I stated before my opinion that Virginia has the best government in the union. They are conservatives who ran as conservatives;  and govern as conservatives.  This latest result then is no surprise.  What is surprising is the GOP's insistence on favoring old guard moderates at every turn.
Perry falters, Romney keeps rolling
Newt moves to second

Despite this latest lesson from Virginia, the GOP's old guard are determined to put an apparatchik at the top of the ticket.  I loved Newt; own his little red book of sayings.  But Newt is essentially a big gummint guy, and to pretend otherwise is  deception.  Cain may not be the best we have to offer, but he is the best we've got. What Gummint Do

Filthy Democrats

In a recent tax planning meeting with one of our clients, we shocked them with what their income tax future looked like for 2013 if -- on the off-chance -- Congress continues to do nothing to provide a long-term permanent set of tax laws. [Full]

They had no idea what tax breaks were expiring this year and next year, and how much it would cost them personally in extra income tax. But they aren't alone, many Americans and even tax professionals aren't aware that their tax bill could rise dramatically next year. [...]

Major Individual Income Tax Benefits Expiring 12/31/2011:

• Personal tax credits applied against income tax no longer apply

• Higher alternative minimum tax exemptions revert back to extraordinarily-low thresholds

• $250 school teacher expense deduction ends

• Mortgage insurance premium deduction expires

• State and local sales tax deductions expire

• Tuition and related fees deduction end

• IRA to charity tax-free transfers stop

Major Individual Income Tax Benefits Expiring 12/31/2012:

• Marriage penalty equalization ends

• Dividends taxed at capital gains rates removed, taxed at regular rates now

• Capital gains low tax rates expires

• Removal of itemized deduction phase out for higher income Americans

• Removal of personal exemption phase out for higher income Americans

• Child care deduction limit of $3,000 reverts to $2,400

• Child credit reduces from $1,000 per child to $500 per child

• Low 10% tax bracket for low income Americans is eliminated

• Lower income tax rates and smaller brackets expires

• Refundable adoption credit and reduced deduction

• American Opportunity college education credit expires

• Major reduction in earned income credits and refunds

• Income tax exemption for debt forgiven on home foreclosures and repossessions

• Deduction for student loan interest ends

• Education IRA limit drops from $2,000 to $500

In summary, because of tax laws expiring this year and next, we estimate that the Smiths will owe $3,598 more in income tax in 2013 than in 2011 with no change in their income.

All of this says nothing about the massive Obamacare and other new taxes in the pipline.  Do you think this gummint is afraid of us?  Doesn't appear so.

Both the ancient Greeks and Romans valued wise and public-spirited citizens. Let’s see just how wise you really are? Are you a Barbarian, Philosopher King, or something in-between?

I know.  I missed the easiest one.  Gah!  I'm hideous; don't look at me.

Nuts about JoePa

Liberal Asshattery
Tomasky finds JoePa

Jumping to Illusions

On the evening of March 1, 2002, Sandusky, it is alleged, was raping a 10-year-old boy in his anus. A 10-year-old boy. In the very showers used by the Nittany Lions players. A boy Sandusky had seduced with promises of things like tickets to games and visits to the mighty Penn State locker room. A graduate assistant, also a former star quarterback and today still an assistant to Paterno, saw it and went to his father. His father told him to go not to the police, according to the report, but to Paterno. The great man would make it right.

And you respected Penn State. You had to. They were good, and they were good: fine young men, early to integrate, high graduation rates. All that was Paterno. A literature major at Brown, for chrissakes. Yet another thing to like about him.

I liked him less after he joined the Big 10, crushing Eastern conference hopes (a move that reverberates to this day, as we watch the Big East conference asphyxiate). I liked him less still when I read that he (and Lou Holtz) had attended Newt Gingrich’s birthday party in 1995.

That was mitigated many years later when I saw that his son had endorsed Barack Obama and his daughter (?)  Hillary Clinton in 2008. “I brought my kids up to think for themselves from Day One,” Paterno said, rather charmingly, at the time.  Michael Tomasky, The Daily Beast

After Sandusky, the people most deserving of contempt are the kid's parents,  for punting  I'm no Penn State fan, but it's sad to see a pretty good man, by all accounts, gone wrecked  for what essentially is a crime of misplaced loyalty.  Anyway, it is what it is.

Here's the thing about unctuous sermonizing by liberals like Tomasky though. They are famously selective about who, and what, triggers outrage.  They'll  reach into the can of nuts and extract juicy political cashews, ignoring myriad Lib peanuts (e.g. Bill Clinton and John Edwards) alone, in their rancid turpitude.

I believe that I am a moral person, but if I am confronted some day with a situation that requires real moral bravery of me, where I really have to choose, and it will hurt—would I do the right thing?
Only if the politics suit you. It's the Lib disease.
