Jews, Judaism

Acts 13: 14, 43 - 52
14 but they passed on from Perga and came to Antioch of Pisid'ia. And on the sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.
43 And when the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.
44 The next sabbath almost the whole city gathered together to hear the word of God.
45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted what was spoken by Paul, and reviled him.

This passage from ACTS was read at mass this morning.  Maybe because this time I was paying attention, but I was struck by the lingo.

"...many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas.."

Am I reading this correctly? Isn't there a distinction made here between Jews and Judaism?  Was Judaism a term originally  applied to Jews who left in the schism that created the "Christian" sect?

My interest in this, here, is purely from the perspective of historical curiosity.  Anyone know?

The "devout converts" to Judaism were not born Jews, but became Jews by choice (and study), as did Elizabeth Taylor, Ivanka Trump, and Sammy Davis, Jr.

Whereas a jew is both a religion and a "race" So Jews are those that were born such and Judaism are those that both converted as well as those jews that practice it.

thoR~ (While anon is correct, I didn't post it)

Jews are from the tribe of Judah and may or may not be involved in Judaism.

The short answer is no Rodge. The long answer for a RC means going back to Jerome's translation and finding the Latin word he used. I don't believe the word Judaism appeared in your text until around 1400 which apparently was when the word was coined. It was probably substituted to make the verse easier to understand for the reader.

The "rebel" text has it like so:

Act 13:43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

G4339
προσήλυτος
prosēlutos
pros-ah'-loo-tos
From the alternate of G4334; an arriver from a foreign region, that is, (specifically) an acceder (convert) to Judaism (“proselyte”): - proselyte.

If you dont think all Jews are not into Judaism, just read up on Israel "Adolf Hitler" Shamir, the boss of Julian Assange and colleague of Ivgeny Kasperky, of "anti-virus" KGB fame...
