When i walk out into the woods, I regularly find rock walls that lined the boundaries of various farms, no long gone. Painting and post cards from even 70 years ago show vast open fields with a few trees around the perimeters. Now, those fields are woodlands so thick they can actually be a bit difficult to walk through.Hell_Is_Like_Newarkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11845488554285075902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15290406.post-32590267840454445782015-05-14T11:31:40.836-04:002015-05-14T11:31:40.836-04:00Thank you for invoking Dixie Ray Lee, although at ...Thank you for invoking Dixie Ray Lee, although at this point no amount of facts will curb our new-age "I learned it in science class" brethren. That, if for no other reason, spells the end of a once great society. It is
true that we cannot determine what it was like millions
or billions of years ago, but we do have good estimates
for the last several hundred years.

In her book Trashing The Planet, Dixie Lee Ray rebutted
several of the myths of the tree-huggers on the subject
of deforestation.

We have pretty good idea of the area of forest land in
America from the time we arrived and can compare that to
what we have today. She made several assertions:

1. The ability to fight forest fires is a recent development.
Prior to the 20th century, all anybody could do was
stand back at watch it burn.

2. Natural propagation happens with or without our help.

3. Teddy Roosevelt signed conservation laws that required
one tree to be planted for every tree harvested. The current
ratio is about 8 planted for every tree harvested.

She maintained that there is more forest land in America
today than existed in pre Colombian times.

She also call BS on the notion that we are destroying
our "Old growth" forests by maintaining that they never
comprised more than about 5 percent of the total forest land,
which is just about where we are today.Leonard Jonesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15290406.post-52980482816314705632015-05-14T09:54:36.637-04:002015-05-14T09:54:36.637-04:00The big lie.
