I was in the USMC and served with the 81's (and no idea what kind that is, not 81mm or 60mm) and there are two external safety pins that are removed prior to dropping it down the barrel. There are two internal shear pins that are severed during firing. It shouldn't go off but that didn't stop me from tackling a private and beating the crap out of him for doing just what is pictured there.
I was USN and have never employed a mortar. Hope they won't explode if dropped in upside down.
