The research arm of Congress says that legislation to give the District a
vote in the House of Representatives is probably unconstitutional, a
finding that could jeopardize its chances of passage, officials and
analysts said yesterday.
The report lands at a time when the D.C. voting rights effort has been
gaining momentum. The new Democratic majority in the House has vowed to
move quickly on such legislation.
Thomas Mann, a congressional scholar at the Brookings Institution, said
the report represents "a creature of the Congress . . . saying this
doesn't really pass constitutional muster. That has to be taken
seriously and will certainly be used by those who oppose it."

If DC residents want a congressional rep, then cede the District back to Maryland, and withdraw Congressional oversight and all Congressional funding. Let the fucking leeches pay their own way. Maryland is so well run, another few hundred thousand on the take won't even make a ripple and prolly give that smarmy Governor O'Malley another term so Maryland can really sink into bankruptcy and chaos.

Better yet, give it back to Virginia!
ReplyDeleteThey already gave back Virginia's part of DC in 1846.
ReplyDeleteDC has about 600,000 residents. That falls between Vermont (#49 by population) and Wyoming (#50).
Puerto Rico has about 4 million. That falls between Kentucky (#26) and Oregon (#27). Puerto Rico has no congressional representative, not even a non-voting one like DC has. Puerto Ricans can't vote in Presidential elections, either.
And we're arguing about DC? Whatever. If there is a solution, it's to do as Dick says: give it back to MD. But what to call it? MD already has a Washington County.
Ahh, Rodger, no thanks. We're trying to beat back the governmental hordes as it is. The DC cancer has already spread too far south, with Fredericksburg becoming a DC bedroom community. We don't want any more of that ilk.
ReplyDeletefranco - the residents would probably call it Kanye - or is it Kenya? - West.

Nuke it from orbit just to make sure???
ReplyDeleteThose of us who commute into the District daily for work would like it very much if they could get the traffic situation sorted out so that there isn't gridlock every couple of blocks! Maybe make it ILLEGAL for the Kenyan wetback to have a motorcade twice a day during Rush Hour! He is such a useless tool.
