Although the part may belong to a female, the masculine is used as the word is a masculine noun. Much like in spanish, the word is also masculine.
While the term "pene" applies to the penis and is a masculine noun and uses "el" in front, the slang term "verga" is a feminine noun and uses "la" in front.
Don't get me started on the gender-benders like "el mapa" and "el idioma". It takes some getting used to.
