| The federal government says THIS is harder to read than This. Got that? ALL CAPS are bad. Mixed Case is Good. |

NYC is spending something like $27 million (too lazy to google the exact figure) to replace its signs in all 5 boroughs.
ReplyDeleteWhile it's true that mixed case is easier to read than all caps (I learned that in journalism class in 1968!), it's also true that bigger, simpler letters are easier to read at a distance, especially in the dark. The older I get, the more I appreciate all-caps street signs.
ReplyDeleteObviously, this decision was made by some young, over-educated, under-experienced whiz kid looking to make his mark in government.
Just what I needed. Thanks a bunch!

MichigammeDave, you left out "politically appointed" and also "over-paid". Otherwise, my father would have been proud of you.

I suppose the Post Office didn't get that memo, since their entire address database is in ALL CAPS.

Don't forget that the font is explicitly specified, licensed, and costs for each letter. No free public domain letter styles are allowed.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't aware of the 3M study, That is just another example where lobbyists need to be eliminated or strictly controlled.

Mendez being hanged HERE!
ReplyDelete3M makes the reflective material that will be used on all these new signs.
ReplyDeleteWhy is TelePrompter text all in caps? Because it is easier for the person to read.
ReplyDeleteMixed case is easier when there are multiple words, as in a sentence or paragraph. For one word, I guarandamtee you all caps is easier unless the font and therefore the sign is made bigger to where the lower case part is the same size as the original upper case. Bigger signs equal bigger supports, more printing materials, more sign material and more likelihood of blow down in a wind. Big barnsmell blows this way. Follow the money, folks.
ReplyDeleteBlow me indeed.

Obviously, some a$$wipe in D.C. has a cuzzin or somesuch in the sign making business.
ReplyDeleteThe next thing will be to increase the size of all street signs to 4x5feet so they can fit in all the language translations...
ReplyDeleteAnd what about the illiterates?!??? Won't they be offeeeended?
ReplyDeleteWhat now, WhizKid?
