In the past 10 days
we've had to replace our:
- refrigerator
- freezer
- dishwasher
- a rotted-out main drain pipe (can you spell plumber)
But that's not what I'm wanting to tell you. Let's focus on what
I'm looking for in an appliance, like the dishwasher. Yes, I've been
here before, but who remembers. The only control I want is a
"wash" switch. That's all. . Fill it up, add some dishwasher
detergent, flip the "on" switch, read a book. We've had about six
of them during our married life, and never once did we want or ask for
a sensor to examine rinse water dirt level. We never once used
"rinse and hold." I'd be willing to pay the same price to buy a
100% mechanical washer (none exist). Over its considerately extended
service life, my repair costs would be approximately zero. And face it,
this unnecessary high tech, high maintenance gadgetry being shoved down
our throats is why we have the government we have. Now, our blind
acceptance has led to THIS!

Get a Bosch. Buy the simplest model. Never look back.
ReplyDeleteWell look around and see if you can find a rebuilt or used commercial dishwasher. New ones are a bit pricey, $2500 and up.
ReplyDeleteGet the power company to check the voltage in. A friend had the same thing happen. They checked. They were over. They paid for all new shit.

ReplyDeleteI am so sympathetic to this gripe. My very 1st laundry machine was a Maytag with mechanical buttons. After 14 years, it broke and I was able to fix it myself with pliers.
Next came a Neptune front loader with electronic controls. My appliance guy gave us a few years of free recall service, but he could never keep it going.
Then I got married and don't fool with laundry anymore. Problem fixed!
Already replaced with the Whirlpool model shown. She reads Consumer's Report which advised against Bosch, LG and something else because you can only get $$ parts through the factory. Having gone through that hell with Sub Zero was quite enough. As far as I was concerned, it wouldn't have been replaced at all. Clean your own stuff after using.

If you do your own repairs and can cross check part numbers, ebay is a godsend. Unfortunately for them, my customers always want it yesterday so they pay out the wazoo for parts.

I think I have that model of dishwasher (without the red 'x's or the switch. Had one dishwasher where the control panel would break every few years.

My Whirlpool washing machine is 22 years old. It has been the best washer ever. Never had a repair, but makes a lot of noise now. Will sure miss it when it finally gives out.
ReplyDeleteYes, I like the simplest machines. Our dryer just quit this year. It only had one setting--hot! Can't get that anymore. The new one takes a lot longer to dry the clothes because hot on it is only warm.

I recommend an attractive Hispanic immigrant with big boobs for a dishwasher. You might even get a rebate and qualify for a grant.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the simple on/off switch. That might be a little more complicated, although I'm thinking you'll figure out the process.
We already purchased new units (Electrolux) else I'd look into the Sunfrost. They're certainly reasonably priced.

Older appliance repair parts are cheap, and the online vendors usually have extensive online fixit guides.
I've repaired the washer, dryer, and dishwasher in our house ( twice on the washer ). Older stuff does wear, but replacement parts for mature tech items are dirt cheap.
Seriously ... hauling heavy shit on staircases is dangerous. I did it for a living as a teenager.
