I can't imagine that there's a single person in the United States who saw this story and didn't  mutter "JFC! WTF?" Aside from Chief Joe Payne that is—   who, truth be known, is prolly just standing behind an his overly officious and idiot patrolman .  I'll also posit that there are a hundred more stories just like this that happened around our nation yesterday, and every day, but didn't make it to DRUDGE.  And that's the point.

As government takes over every aspect of our lives, we are subject to the whims of people as officiously stupid as that cop.  Every government agency has people entrusted with pulling levers, and we have to live by their decisions.  It's regulations. I have no idea what Alan Ehrlich's political affiliation is, but he ought to be elected to the Pasadena City Council.  And get a statue too.  It's that spirit that lived on United Airlines Flight 93.

    It's a ruse! My guess it that the city's uses the 'broken' stoplights and 'understaffed' police force and as an excuse by the city to raise more money from their citizens for more taxes. "We're out of money" - the government's common mantra.

    Something most people won't realize but, if you voluntarily start directing traffic like this guy did (including at an accident scene while waiting for the police to arrive) you are legally liable if anyone is injured or any property damage occurs - that is, wave someone thru and he hits someone else, you're liable for the damages.

    Just a fact of life in lawsuit happy America.

    Not necessarily. Not unless you do something negligent -- like motioning the car to pull into the path of another car. You are responsible for your own negligence. You are not liable for the negligence of others.

    I find it interesting that they had the manpower to come out and ticket this guy, but didn't have the manpower to spare someone to direct the traffic!
