Steve Jobs RIP

  1. It's strange when hugely successful people die younger then me.

The one thing about Apple I have a hard time reconciling is why their product fabrication is done in China. I've read that even with higher wage costs and our staggering regulations, the additional costs would have been 10-15%.

Now for fungible products, say like steel or tires, yeah that 10% is a huge factor in where to make something. But for a singular product like Apple, would that additional cost made much difference? When people line up for blocks to buy a product they could get simply by pre-ordering?

I sure don't want to come off as a redistributionist, every company should maximize it's profit where ever it can. In this case though, I'm ambivalent.

    Plus it's Red FRIGGING China-hellooooo

    Anyway, God Speed Steve

  2. I am so sad about Stevo passing. And not just for the bushels of money he made for me.

When I saw a prototype Mac in 1983, I got weak in the knees. Prior to this, I saw no future for PCs because programable calculators were so much faster and easier to use. And why would any individual need to manipulate more data than could be keyed by hand?

Nowadays as I push gigabytes of data around, FOR FUN, I have a lot of appreciation for the people who made this practical. Through death and retirement, it's painful to lose them.

To the young dunces who missed the digital revolution, and the old curmudgeons who deprive themselves the joy of using Apple products, you have my pity. Steve Jobs was not a likable guy, but he was insanely great at what he did. Forever young, brilliant, foolish, and hungry. Nobody will ever wonder why he kept at it after becoming a multi-billionaire and cancer victim.

    RIP
