Paul LePage, the Republican governor of Maine,
mentioned an uncomfortable truth in a radio address this month: Maine
has more welfare recipients than income tax payers.
Democrats challenged
the accuracy of this assertion.
The Bangor Daily News fact-checked LePage and discovered that 445,074
Mainers paid state income tax, while 453,194 received some sort
of state aid.
In Maine, Medicaid, welfare, food stamps and subsidies for education
have a combined enrollment of 660,000. [Full]

I like
the part where Democrats challenged the report. Like someone had called
their children bastards (which I reckon is how they see it). The
best way to attack this unsustainable way of life is to make it a joke,
like these actual welfare application
statements.

I live in Maine and used to work as a consultant at DHHS. The number 4 years ago, and probably now was much higher. I once did a count of active medicaid ID's in a certain database and got a little over 900,000. Some of those are fraudulent and some are duplicates but the 600,000 number seems a tad low to me. Oh and our taxes suck too.
