My
interest in Scientology goes back to 1991, when Time Magazine published
a rare article about them, and especially their teaming up with Ralph
Nader to suppress the sale of Prozac. Rare because the "church"
would spend
whatever it took to fight any criticism. If you spoke negatively
using the
fledgling internet, for instance, you'd most likely find police
at your door with a
court order to seize your computer and floppy disks.
Founder, and science fiction writer L/Ron Hubbard harbored "long
harbored a profound and obsessive hatred for psychiatrists" They
also
see pharmaceutical companies and doctors as competition. Ralph
Nader
sold "lawsuit kits" to tort lawyers, and laid the groundwork for myriad
suits, including Prozac.
Scientology, Islam, and the Italian Mafia share the common trait
of
treating apostates as mortal enemies. Unlike the others,
Scientology
is a comic opera bizarre. I mean that in the good way.
