IIRC Hope was a boxer in his youth, and Cagney was a tough Irish kid from a poor family, who became a dancer before he became an actor. The were both acquainted with poverty in their youth. It seems to me that they had a lot more "depth" than the current crop of male entertainers. They didn't go through the theater departments or acting classes that became the standard after WW II.
ReplyDeletePerhaps no mention of Hope should be made without reference to his most famous line.
ReplyDeleteNow do it with headbands and your shirts off!
ReplyDeleteAnd get your feet off the table!

ah, the days when real men did tap.
ReplyDeleteReal men hugging??? Losing your phobic cred here, Rodge.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the adjacent video of Johnny Carson where real men kiss. It's all spinning out of control.
Hope's theme song for years was Thanks For The Memories. If you've never seen The Big Broadcast of 1938, its worth watching. Hope sings that song with his ex-wife and goes into half a dozen verses. A true classic.
