I
just discovered the "Idiot Abroad" series, and am gob smacked by how
entertaining it is. Encored in 2010, so many of you may be
familiar.
OTOH, it's a Brit Sky 1 series,
so maybe not. I want to compare Pilkington to Michael Palin and his Travel series; and while
there are similarities, Idiot
is more an amalgamation of Palin and Eric Cartman. I think I've
queued
up the China episode (the first) above. I've only watched two
others
(India and Jordan), all just precious, IMO. On Netflix, or

An Idiot Abroad and the second series "the bucket list". Absolutely hilarious. Stumbled upon them when they premiered on the science Channel.

I saw this when it first aired over here. The guy is a total dick and so are the two guys directing his travels. I encounter quite enough dicks in my life and don't want to put up with more of their crap when I get home. I suffered through the first season and that was more than enough for me.

Because I finish what I start, but I was really glad when that first season was over. I thought the show was somewhat interesting but not funny at all.

Wow, I loved that show. I do think Ricky Gervais is an assclown, but Stephen Merchant is mostly just a jerk to sort of play the part. They have a podcast and what not, which is also very funny.
ReplyDeleteKarl always seemed like a lovable oaf. I loved that show and have re-watched it all several times. I'm actually hoping there is another.

I agree about Gervais; but he and Merchant are disembodied role players who make the necessary itinerary decisions that keep Karl going. Karl--I love the guy. If he's not just being himself, then he's one hell of an actor.
ReplyDeleteI can identify with Karl's xenophobic character butI think he's acting except when it comes to eating toads and bugs.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see the show escort him around London's Muslim town. If he were allowed to stay in character I think that would be really funny. Assuming of course the cast and crew survives.

Celt, I used to be that way about books. Just recently I decided that I was too fricken old to waste time reading things that I found boring, poorly written, depressing, or just plain bad. I don't have time to waste doing things I don't enjoy. I've done enough things I disliked already.
There is no one is forcing me, and I do not report to any one any more, so I made a "Command Decision."
I will not waste my time reading or watching something that I find below standard or not entertaining or educating.
If you feel you must, good for you, but I quit doing it. Got too many other things I WANT to do.

Karl has a new series that just started: The Moaning of Life.

It's more about other people with Karl's participation and commentary.
I think his attraction is his apparent honesty … and, yeah, his non-BBC accent.
This series is better, 'cause he isn't treated as a jerk.
Paul Merton's travels are greatly entertaining.
