As
recently reported, the site also contains letters from 5th grade
students asking text publisher Houghton Mifflin why they did not
include in their textbook the fact that Christopher Columbus ‘burned,
slayed and hanged’ Native Americans who would not find gold for him.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – According to a
Teach for America
website, culturally responsive teaching in math is important because
“math has traditionally been seen as the domain of old, White men.”
Judging from the math curriculum recommended, this TFA group, like all
other social justice educators, wants minorities to believe that what
relates most to their lives in America is racism and oppression.
For example, the site recommends “Critically Conscious Mathematics” and
“Radical Math.”
Radical Math was created by educator Jonathan Osler several years ago
while teaching at El Puenta Academy in New Jersey. Osler taught Radical
Math along-side Cathy Wilkerson, a former member of the Weather
Underground Organization (with Bill Ayers) who once participated in a
plot to detonate a nail bomb at a dance for military personnel at Fort
Dix.
Radical Math provides hundreds of social justice math lessons obviously
meant to indoctrinate. For example, lesson titles include “Sweatshop
Accounting,” “Racism and Stop and Frisk,” “When Equal Isn’t Fair,” “The
Square Root of a Fair Share” and “Home Buying While Brown or Black.”
Today, Osler is director of the San Francisco Teacher Residency, a
teacher training and job placement program created by the San Francisco
Unified School District and Common Core assessment creator and
validation committee member, Linda Darling-Hammond.
Astonishingly, in proudly promoting ‘cultural competence’ and ‘critical
consciousness’ in education, the TFA website’s home page links to a
Wikipedia definition of critical consciousness that describes it as a
concept developed by Paulo Freire and grounded in post-Marxist critical
theory.

The irony is expecting children to think in terms of numbers, when they steer them in the direction of one herd, one type of thought and one source of everything they think they should have.
ReplyDeleteIf teachers hadn't embraced such nonsense with their participation in the collective of the union, they would realize they've accomplished little and mathematics became the tedious tools of the working folks, who don't really count, since they're not smart enough to aspire to the ivory towers at the universities.
TFA is where you go when a school system wont hire you. I was on a school board for eight years and this curriculum crap has been around for a while. Always somebody from a liberal school or think tank has a better way to teach math and they have few case studies to prove it. Our biggest myth in education comes from the federal level and it is that all kids can learn the same information the same. Bush was a bonehead on this issue too.
ReplyDeleteWhile Bush gets most of the credit for No Child Left Behind...many people forget that it was co-wrote by Teddy "Why are my car keys in the river" Kennedy. SUre BUsh deserves credit for the bonehead move of signing that act, but what's more it shows what happens when you try to work with those across the aisle. First you get suckered nto signing something you shouldn't, then you get all the blame too.
ReplyDeleteMy, my, my...how times change.
ReplyDeleteWhen *I* got shit-faced, it always had to do with alcohol.
In that pic it looks like Bill Ayers in the back.....jus sayin.

Columbus and the conquistadores were pikers compared to Montezuma and the other native leaders. What does it say about your culture when being enslaved and forcibly converted to Christianity by Spaniards is actually an improvement for 99% of your culture?
