Inspector George Gently

Inspector George Gently

Crime drama, set in the 1960s, about an old-school detective trying to come to terms with a time when the lines between the police and criminals have become blurred.
I resisted the series "Inspector George Gently," which Netflix kept insisting I'd like because the name put me off.  It's  now at the top of my list of best series ever.  The genius of each episode, which at 90 minutes or so are more feature films than episodes, is the twist.  Every episode ends with a gobsmack.  But, and here's the genius, the solution once revealed is transparent and uncontrived. It was there all along; but your mind wouldn't let you go there.  Five stars for acting too. Your mileage may differ if you love Gomer Pyle re-runs. Watch on Netflix or BBC

  1. As soon as I finish "Midsomer Murders" I will follow your suggestion.

  2. One of the things I particularly like about "Gently" is the basic decency and humanity of the character. His second is an egotistical douche but Gently keeps soldiering on and not letting anything get in the way of his pursuit of the truth.

  4. I've watched the first 3 shows and have the rest on my netflix queue. The characters are interesting and the plots are decent.

I really do hope they manage to keep the politics relatively quiet. In the pilot, they went a lot more heavily on gay issues( or at least did them clumsily) than I thought was necessary to set up the confrontation with the villan, but I could live with it.

  5. Has anyone noticed just how much the British seem to murder each other?

  6. I am surprised that Midsomer has any population left after 17 years. Midsomer must have a tremendous influx of people to sustain their murder rate.

Ooof, and just got the first two discs of season 2. Pedophiles and abortion. I think I'm in for a long slog.

Please tell me this gets better.
