scream-of-consciousness;
"If you're trying to change minds and influence people it's probably not a good idea to say that virtually all elected Democrats are liars, but what the hell."
I'm curious, if you are a true RUSH fan, do you see any symbolic relationship of the famous "Man in the Star" drawing and todays Libertarians (i.e., Tea Party members) ?
There is unrest in the forest, There is trouble with the trees, For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas.
The trouble with the maples, (And they're quite convinced they're right) They say the oaks are just too lofty And they grab up all the light. But the oaks can't help their feelings If they like the way they're made. And they wonder why the maples Can't be happy in their shade.
There is trouble in the forest, And the creatures all have fled, As the maples scream, "Oppression" And the oaks just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights. They say, "The oaks are just too greedy; We will make them give us light." Now there's no more oak oppression, For they passed a noble law, And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw.
Never heard of or listened to "2112" but it has to be better than the longest song of sixties which I figure was Canned Heat's "Refried Boogie" which droned on for 41 minutes. I chose to buy their double record over the Beatles White Album because I loved "Going Up The Country" and could only afford one or the other at the time. Biggest recording purchase mistake I ever made as all of sides three and four were one song with the same licks over and over. Never did get the White Album. Off topic much?
Hate Rush. Hate 'em, can't listen to 'em. Brilliant musicians, absolutely shit music. Like modern jazz circa the 60s and 70s, it's a nails-on-a-chalkboard sound.
And I'm a HUGE fan of progressive rock, just so we're clear on the topic.

ReplyDeleteThe only time I heard RUSH, to my knowledge, was when Geddy Lee appeared with Bob and Doug McKenzie.
ReplyDeleteRodger,
ReplyDeleteOne song I highly recommend. Anthem:

begging hands bleeding hearts will only cry out for more...
Check out their song "The Trees". Its thought provoking, although I think I heard the songwriter didn't really have a message when he penned it.

Guh-r8 allegory. Or fable, if you prefer.
ReplyDeleteWhichever the case, it's in the 10 ring.
I used "2112" because it's listed as the longest (22 minutes) song from the 70's.
ReplyDeleteLove the "Woodpecker" sound in that song - nice touch

ReplyDeleteThe "White Album", if released today, would be called RACIST. I'm sure Barry grinds his teeth silently with every mention of where he lives.
ReplyDeleteWhut chu talkin' 'bout, Willis? Barry White? Barry White lives in Heaven, Man! He didn't have a racist bone in his body!
ReplyDelete2112,
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites. I love being in that state between sleeping and wakefulness and listening to that whole side.
Beautiful.
