If God did not exist, it would be
necessary to invent him
Voltaire's statement was made as part of his larger argument that
the existence of God and/or belief in God
are beneficial and necessary for civilized society to function.
The larger context of the debate in which he was engaged at the time
indicates that he did not intend this statement to be an ironic quip
essentially claiming that God is fictional, as it is commonly used
today.
In fact, the statement was made as part of a piece that he wrote
comdemning and refuting an atheistic essay called "The Three Imposters".
Sadly, and with no surprise, the ones we invent don't measure up to the real One.

Sir H the Comet
As I see millions of little brown friends flood our border to change our democracy forever, the only solace I can take is that today the Hispanic is in church celebrating the resurrection along with the European Americans, while the Muslim sits at home sharpening his knife. Happy Easter. -Anymouse
ReplyDeleteAnd you can rest assured that sharpening their knives is exactly what Muslims worldwide are doing!
ReplyDeleteEASTER SUNDAY, 2016:
I just watched the local TV news, which featured a report on the latest suicide bombing today in Pakistan, where dozens of CHRISTIANS (largely women and children) on an Easter outing were killed.
The news featured a local man, a restaurant owner, who has family in Pakistan and was pleased to report that his family members there were safe. They showed him checking his phone, with photos of his family members. THE WOMEN IN THE PHOTOS WERE ALL WEARING HEADSCARVES!
And I'm thinking, "Yeah, YOUR family members are safe, because it was CHRISTIANS who were targeted! Why are they interviewing YOU?" Couldn't they find any local Pakistani CHRISTIANS to feature on the news report? I mean, isn't it a bit like reporting on Nazi atrocities and interviewing a local German who's overjoyed that his family in Germany WASN'T marched into the gas chamber, and in all the photos of his family they're wearing jackboots and swastikas???
Meanwhile, in Belgium, there's finally some backlash going on, by self-described "soccer hooligans"; predictably, the demonstrators are being characterized as "right-wing" and "Nazis". They had the nerve to display a banner condemning ISIS and they harassed Muslims; obviously Belgian authorities cannot permit such disrespect for "diversity".
