Congress to the Rescue: Quashing Obama’s Internet Giveaway
“Government exists to
protect us from each other.
Where government has gone beyond its limits is in
deciding to protect us from ourselves.” ―Ronald Reagan
Quashing
Obama’s Internet Giveaway
President Obama’s plan to give away the Internet back-end to
dictatorial control of countries like Russia, China, Iran, Cuba, and
North Korea has been quashed because of a provision tucked away in the
recent omnibus budget bill passed by the US Congress. Yes, hidden
in
amongst all the pork barrel frittering and boondoggle squandering of
the public funds, there was one bona fide gem thrown into the mix.
BLAH-BLAH-BLAH
Not as bad as it sounds. ICANN does not have control of the internet. ICANN controls what is put in the seven "root" nameservers. By convention all computers are shipped to start at the "root" nameservers (or their ISP uses the roots) in order to have a single internet that is the same for everybody.
ReplyDeleteIf we did not like what is in the roots, a few American universities could set up seven new nameservers and invite anyone who wants more freedom to use them. The original nameservers before ICANN were run by Princeton, a University in London, places like that.
Worse than it sounds: This is the dream UN funding mechanism.
