Here's the
deal. R.C. priests have, from day
one,
the power to forgive a penitent
sinner of any and all confessed sin.
More to the point, in this case, if you're not Catholic, who
cares? I have no
interest in keeping up with pronouncements by, say, the Methodist
Council of Bishops, because I'm not Methodist. Nor would they be
particularly interested in what Pope Francis has to say.
Oui? So why
do the leftist secular press pay so much attention to this Pope's
utterances?*
Simple.
If I'm a rat bastard abortion (the Left's holy sacrament) activist, I'm
terrified that President Trump will make good his promise to defund
Planned Parenthood. So, using their peculiar calculus, Pope
Francis can be made to look like he's saying, hey, this is okay.
Oh. This is a CNN story. Case closed.

As a good ole Southern Baptist, I got flummoxed by the first half of the sentence. Priests cannot forgive sin. No priest, no bishop, no pastor, no mere man can forgive sin. Only GOD can forgive sin, and he does so through the blood of Jesus Christ. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives allows us to pray directly to GOD without the need of intermediates. While priests can guide, consult, educate, console, and such, they are not GOD and cannot forgive sin.
ReplyDeleteAs to abortion, in the eyes of GOD all sin is equal. If GOD can forgive murder, then GOD can forgive abortion. The blood of Jesus can forgive all sins.
Donald, I linked the RCC position, but the short answer is that it is not a "man" who forgives sin, but an apostolic representative as ordained by Jesus Christ.
ReplyDeleteChrist gave this power to other men so the Church, which is the continuation of his presence throughout time (Matt. 28:20), would be able to offer forgiveness to future generations. He gave his power to the apostles, and it was a power that could be passed on to their successors and agents, since the apostles wouldn’t always be on earth either, but people would still be sinning.

I was a Methodist for a good many years until walking across the street to something else due to marriage, but I can assure you that most Methodists have no interest in keeping up with pronouncements by the Methodist Council of Bishops, either.

Rodger - thanks. Not trying to start trouble, it's just the Baptist in me speaking up. I understand the representative thing, but still rebel at the thought of having some other person stand between me and God. As Baptist, we put more emphasis on the Holy Spirit that allows us direct access to God. But all is well, we know longer shoot people over our differences and sometimes we Baptist even allow dancing.

That's interesting about Baptists, because Jews are similar, in that one doesn't need a representative or conduit to speak with God. One can be a devout, highly-observant Jew and never set foot in a synagogue.
