Call
it the crisis of whiteness.
White anxiety has fueled this year’s political tumult in the West:
Britain’s surprising vote to exit the European Union, Donald J. Trump’s
unexpected capture of the Republican presidential nomination in the
United States, the rise of right-wing nationalism in Norway, Hungary,
Austria and Greece.
Whiteness, in this context, is more than just skin color. You could
define it as membership in the “ethno-national majority,” but that’s a
mouthful. What it really means is the privilege of not being defined as
“other.”
Whiteness means being part of the group whose appearance, traditions,
religion and even food are the default norm. It’s being a person who,
by unspoken rules, was long entitled as part of “us” instead of “them.”
But national and racial identity were often conflated for the white
majority. That identity felt to many white people like one of the most
important pillars holding up their world — and now it seems under
threat.

Insert "Western Civilization" for "whiteness" It is more accurate.

ReplyDeleteCall it the crisis of whiteness.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather call it the worldwide retreat of collectivist jackasses. Meanwhile, the best Trump cocktail parties are in Florida. Another one tonight.
As an absolutely purebred WASP, descended from settlers who were here 5 or 6 generations before 1776, I'd like to point out that there is no such thing as whiteness. Sure, there are lots of us who are not black, brown, yellow, red, or other shade, but nowhere is there really a white "community" or a white "identity". No, we are broken down into dozens and dozens of separate subgroups. We are English, Irish, Polish, Norwegian, French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Belgian, Latvian, Armenian, Russian, etc. Even Italian, Greek, Israeli, Spanish and Portuguese. Each of these ethnic cliques has their own identity, culture, diet, and at-home language. Further subdivision exists along religious lines. Most of these groups have been at war with the other groups time after time across the span of history. Most of these groups came to America and had to deal with ethno-prejudice and potent stereotypes. "No Irish need apply"; all Italians are in the Mafia, all Swedes are stubborn, all Polish are stupid. It merely took lots of hard work across 3 or so generations to overcome such views. About the only generic "white thing" in all the world is our belief in the freedoms and opportunities in the USA, and embedded in the Constitution. And these days nearly half of us have become left wing Socialist leaners. So where is this "whiteness" thing that is the "norm"? Sure, "western civ" as some have pointed out, but perhaps more accurate would be "thank God that we're Americans".
