Latin and Greek in high school? When was that? I think I'm old enough to have seen what's taught since about 1955, and they were not there. New York City schools at one time taught German, but that was halted in WW1. It never came back. Latin? In Catholic schools maybe.
My dad (1918-2004) studied Latin in the Passaic, NJ public schools. Before computers, if I needed to know the meaning of a phrase in Latin (or even in French), I'd call him up and he'd translate it for me.
Huh, I took four years of Latin at a public high school in Michigan 1976-1980. Maybe I was one of the lucky ones. Having that Latin as a background has certainly proved to be a valuable asset through the ensuing years.
