  5. Doesn't anybody say, 'tidal wave' any more? Has it been declared racist or something?

  6. GC - Most all waves are tidal, because they are a result to the moon's tidal forces on the oceans. Tsunamis are waves caused by earthquakes and massive landslides.

So. it was a bit of a misnomer.

  8. I believe you are misinformed on two counts, Leelu. You obviously don't live in the Midwest because if you did, you would know that many waves are caused by wind. The Great Lakes here have no tides but most certainly have waves. Tsunami is merely the Japanese word for tidal wave [tsu, port + nami, wave].

However you do have a point that tidal waves are not caused by tides and may be the reason that the English term fell out of favor (OTOH they are not caused by ports either.) My guess is that it originally had more to do with the fact that liberals like to use big words they think other people don't know.

  9. It's OK! the birth certificate has been found! It washed up on the beach in Kenya.

  10. GrinfilledCelt,
Y'gotta add a comment about "tidal bores" (not related to AlGore) which are waves caused by tides which look like a wimpy tsunami going up a river channel.
Then there's the yet-to-be mis-named giant wave caused by Michael Moore sitting down in a bathtub. (Cover your eyes!)
