FOYLE'S WAR WINS AWARD
Major Award
I previously mentioned that we were enjoying Foyle's War
and it appears I was dead on. The
Department of Major Awards has named it the "Best Scripted, Acted, and Genearally
Delicious
Television Series Ever Made For All Audiences." I am not
making that up.
The show is great. I have all the episodes on DVD (the latest are coming out in March and can be pre-ordered) and have watched them several times. They strive for historical accuracy and the clothes, vehicles, and especially the weapons are a treat. wildbill
My wife and I watch a lot of British TV and every time I see Honeysuckle Weeks ("Sam") play a part where she isn't smart, sweet, loyal and patriotic, I'm disappointed.
Sadly, I think the post-WWII Foyle episodes are terrible. Without the looming presence of the War, the series is just a simple whodunnit, and not really worth watching. (This is not to take away anything from the cast -- esp. Michael Kitchen, who is consistently superb regardless of his role -- but the scripts suffer badly from the post-war lassitude.)
I haven't seen any of the post-war episodes. Was looking forward to it but Kim harshed my mellow. Oh well, I can always watch thirty years worth of "A Touch of Frost" again.
I realize I am way behind all you cultured bastards here, but I just finished watching HBOs Game of Thrones series after ignoring it for 4 seasons.. pretty fun stuff - a midget (er - little person) with a British accent, swords, full nudity, and filmed in Northern Ireland.. a entertaining watch.
The costume drama didn't do much for me. These are characters you would never want to meet. Ninety percent of the story aimlessly droned on their faults, as if the real point was to diminish an entire generation of Brits. The rest was split between annoying and insipid. The end was a relief.
Can't compare to Poirot or Castle. Of course Firefly is undisputed as the best TV series forever.
Not bad for a show that was originally a 5 segment inter-season filler.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've seen all seasons two or three times.
ReplyDeleteI think it's lauded in certain quarters, because it's a bit cynical.

ReplyDeleteThe post-war episodes I have seen all seem to go into the "social justice" arena as side topics.

"A Touch of Frost" again ...
ReplyDeleteI recently tried for a third go around, but Netflix dunt stream the series (nor Amazon).
Try Poirot. The newer episodes are gold; a more serious Poirot character.

ReplyDeleteI recently discovered and got hooked on Thrones too. And it has dawned on me that this is almost a mirrored script of ROME.
ReplyDeleteHulu streams many episodes for free.
