Hoo, the Navy has gone funnier than when Junior
put his
tadpoles in Aunt Lu's milk. It's wonderful. Headline, the Washington
Times: "Navy admiral wants to get rid of urinals."
On aircraft carriers. Yep. See, urinals aren't good for gender-equity,
which is what the Navy is for.
Best I can tell, the admiral figures urinals make the
girls aboard feel
plumbing-challenged. It gums up their self-concept. And life, remember,
is already tough for gals on warships. It's bad enough having those
boomy old gun thingies everywhere, and those smelly airplanes. They
make a hostile environment and all. But the worst is those disgusting
white patriarchy symbols, stuck threateningly to bathroom walls.
Think about it. Every time a woman goes to the men's room, there they
hang, row on row, in silent reproach, telling her she isn't Fully A
Person.
The horror.
But now help gallops over the horizon, thumpety-thump. The help's name
is Admiral John Nathman, and (incredibly) he's a naval aviator. Yes
indeed. Potty John, the Carrie Nation of urinals, is going to make it
all better. He wants "gender-neutral water closets."
When I was a Marine, I always wanted a commander who had an interest in
urinals. None of them did, and they probably still don't. But the Navy,
as Marines have always suspected, is a little different. And apparently
getting differenter. (Fred on

Oh-oh..... the fights over leaving the toilet seats up are gonna be demoralizing !
ReplyDeleteMethinks brother Nathan has no dog in this fight. I'm betting he prefers to drain the lizard / shed a tear for Lord Nelson / water the lilies / let slip the dogs of War / fill the Swamp /water the horses / take a leak / wizz / return that leased beer from the comfort of the seated position. As he is a retired Nasal Radiator taking this very out of character position, Admiral Nathan probably either had a traumatic 0'club men's head experience as a JO or suffered a catastrophic relief tube back pressure incident on short final resulting his failure to call the ball for a wave off.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, this could work out if they just replaced the current ones.

And the guys could still come out ahead with a rest area for the "boys".
Geo
Court Martial for leaving the seat up !!
ReplyDeleteI got out when they took the skin mags from the base exchanges.
ReplyDeleteSort of a last straw.
Nathman has a large say in carrier design and refit. Low flow urinals on carriers stink. Rather than address the "low-flow" aspect, ADM Nathman wants to get rid of them.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, it allows for flexibility when reassigning heads and berthing compartments as gender mixes fluctuate in Divisions and/or Departments. But hey,I really wouldn't expect a Jarhead to understand all of this "technical" stuff.

Where will they store those big, white mints if they get rid of urinals?
ReplyDeleteFreddie Sykes
They can always go back to the original "head" concept, eh, Master Chief?
ReplyDeleteThere you go. I learned something new. I thought male sailors pissed over that rail and female sailors did the same off the poop deck...or is it the fan tail?
ReplyDeleteI just took a time travel back to the 1960's when the tin can had stainless steel urinals that were 'shock mounted' with rubberized connections between the salt water supply running 24X7 and the urinals. Of course, twenty+ years on, the rubber had deteriorated, and was 'fixed' with electricians tape. Right way, wrong way and Navy way seems apropos.
ReplyDeleteI was gonna ask what were female swabbies doing in the mens head, but never mind....
Here's my vote: Unisex heads, with urinals. If men are forced to disrobe partially to micturate, there will be a need for more head space. Things slow down, as demonstrated at any and all stadiums throughout the land. No matter if the ratio is 4:1, there will be a line at the womens. The trough concept will also work.
