Science tempers fears on climate change

September 02, 2006

THE world's top climate scientists have cut their worst-case forecast for global warming over the next 100 years.

A draft report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, obtained exclusively by The Weekend Australian, offers a more certain projection of climate change than the body's forecasts five years ago.

For the first time, scientists are confident enough to project a 3C rise on the average global daily temperature by the end of this century if no action is taken to cut greenhouse gas emissions.  Before,  they were only confident enough to project a rise of 5.8C on current levels. Prior to that they were confident enough to predict temperature decreases of between 1.7C and 5.2C.  A climatologist spokesperson stated,  "We are quite confident of this current confidence. Wait, I think that should be Fahrenheit."

So it wasn't AIDS but, rather, electrocution that killed Freddy Mercury.

Story's as accurate as a Reuters photo. There's no "increased confidence" or significant new science involved. The 5.8C wasn't a prediction, it was a "storyline." IOW, it was presented as a prediction for anyone stupid enough to accept it as such. But if you called them on it, they'd say, "No we're not predicting that. It's just a storyline. Whatever gave you the idea that was a prediction?"

What's a "storyline"? Far as I can tell, it's something you can put in front of the public and policymakers, but you don't have to defend scientifically. It's, well, a Reuters photo.

Now, if those "reporters" wanted to do some reporting, they could have asked why the IPCC is backing off its "storyline." But, you know, that gets to be work if you start doing that.
