Shotgun is the position next to the driver. It comes from the stagecoach days when the guy riding there carried a shotgun to discourage outlaws and overly-enthusiastic injuns.

The chin-mounted machine gun was in the shop that day. The guy outside was just a loaner.

Naturally, the rattling noise the pilot was complaining about disappeared when the crew chief came along to listen for it.

I think I saw that picture on a mil blog a while back. The story was he rode out there so that a wounded soldier could ride inside. There where no med evacs available at that moment.
